Abstract:
Produced in 1951, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is a mirror of its' times, based on Harry Bates' short story FAREWELL TO THE MASTER. A visitor from space, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), comes to Earth on a peaceful mission, only to be promptly shot the moment he emerges from his spacecraft. Surviving his injury, Klaatu sets forward to plea for peace and world harmony, but he encounters irrational fear and rampant suspicion everywhere he goes, except for the characters played by Patricia Neal and Sam Jaffe. Directed by Robert Wise. Laserdisc is not chapter encoded. The 20th Century Fox DVD print contains the following special features: audio commnetary by Robert Wise and Nicolas Meyer; 70-minute making-of documentary; Movietone Newsreel (1951); restoration comparison; 5 still galleries; shoting script; theatrical trailer; full frame format (1.33:1); English Stereo, English Mono, French Mono, Spanish Mono; English and Spanish subtitles.
